Studying Factors contributing to Malnutrition in an Urban Slum of Dhaka, Bangladesh

During the summer of 2013 I worked as a research intern in the Center for Nutrition and Food Security at the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B). I completed statistical analysis of demographic, socioeconomic and anthropometric data collected from subjects living in an urban slum in the Mirpur district of Dhaka city. The results of this study were used as the basis for an article examining environmental contributors to stunted growth in children. I also observed clinical rounds in the diarrhea ward and interacted with mothers and undernourished children in the Nutrition Rehabilitation Unit of the hospital in order to gain a better understanding of the challenges leading to malnutrition as well as its prevention and treatment.
