Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)

United States of America
2013
Internship

Teresa spent the summer interning in Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), where she worked to communicate the Agency’s work to Congress. This placement provided her with exposure to a variety of sectors in the USAID portfolio; she helped out on projects in issue areas like Water, Microfinance, Democracy Promotion, and Food Security and across different continents. Her assignments involved involved reviewing reports to Congress on the Agency’s work and agency testimony before Congress, attending relevant hearings and briefings on Capitol Hill for the Agency, researching Congressional Members’ positions on a variety of development issues, creating briefing materials for senior Agency staff, and preparing those senior staff people to appear before Congress. Through her internship, she learned so much about not only the role of Congress in American development assistance, but, more broadly, how and why Americans engage in foreign aid. One highlight of her internship included meeting Muhammad Yunus (!) in person.
